Carlton foundation player in 1864 who also appeared with Royal Park in 1866 then moved to Melbourne in 1868 along with Harry Chadwick and Charles Forrester after an internal ruckus.
He was vice-captain from 1869, filling in as captain during that year when Henry Harrison wasn't available, and served as vice-captain the next season and in 1871. He was elevated to captain in 1872 and served again in his last year with the club in 1873.
In 1870 he was secretary and treasurer of the club before resigning in advance of the 1871 season.

Possibly the James Byrne who was Vice President in 1886.
Some sources show him playing in 1866 and 1867, and from 1874 to 1875 then again in 1877.
