In August 1898 Hagenauer joined Sale. There was a protest by Bairnsdale about him playing as they didn't believe he was eligible, until Sale submitted that the campus of Ormond College he attended was in Gippsland.

In June 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps and served in England and France.
