Pearson had kicked more than 1000 goals in the amateurs, including 160 in 1934, when granted a permit to play for Melbourne in 1938.

He lived in the St Kilda zone and was granted a residential clearance to play for Melbourne in exchange for letting Jack Lowry join the Saints, but instead opted to join The Argus as a journalist instead.

Pearson was also a state cricketer, playing 14 first class matches.
