Melbourne's poor second half of the season continued as they slumped to their second loss in a row, and their second defeat at the hands of Fitzroy for the season - all but ending their hopes in the premiership race.

With their followers and forwards both desperately outmatched they were beaten easily in three of four quarters, even when the visitors lost a player early due to injury.

Despite perfect conditions, the game was described as an unpleasant spectacle where men on both sides went out of their way to get at one another, and the general character of the exhibition was discreditable. It was a return to the 'unsociable' football that Melbourne had been guilty of early in the season, but this time didn't lead to a victory.

The atmosphere was not assisted by a dispute between the MCC and Fitzroy about non-playing members of the club having to pay for admission to the ground on the day. It was seen as payback for Fitzroy stopping MCC members having open access to their ground for the first match between the clubs.

In the end the visitors had the last laugh, playing with better system across the day in most areas except for the wings. Fitzroy had the advantage early in the game before Melbourne improved greatly before half-time. The game swung back in Fitzroy's favour in the third quarter, scoring two goals while restricting Melbourne to a single hurried shot on goal.

Best were Sholl, Sheehan and O'Halloran.
