August 1875 Match vs Carlton

Saturday August 21 - University Ground
Crowd: 5000-7000

Carlton 2
Melbourne 0 (half time 0-0)

Carlton win by 2 goals

The match was played on a fenced ground and an admission fee was charged. It was a charity match to raise money for Sandhurst cricket Edward Jackson who had been badly burned in a mining explosion. As only 105 pounds was raised, it was clear many of the audience had shirked the admission cost and jumped the fence.

The two best sides in the city had split their first two games one apiece, so the match would give the winner an advantage in the race towards the premiership. Melbourne won the toss and kicked with a breeze in the first half. They attacked first but were repelled.

Both sides had their chances for the rest of the half but neither could score, and the game went to half-time level. After a five minute break the Blues took their chances with the wind and after a scrappy start took over and started attacking. Carlton kicked two quick goals to kill off the contest and all but confirm they would be the premier side of 1875.

Best were Longden, Davidson and John Bennie.
