Highest score against West Coast
Even after suffering their first defeat in 14 games a week earlier, Melbourne was not expected to be troubled by the 17th placed Eagles. With a number of enforced changes due to injury, and temperatures above 30 degrees they dominated play early but struggled to score. Two running goals by Alyssa Bannan got them going, setting up a 19 point lead at quarter time. Against the odds, the home side held Melbourne out in the second term. The Demons had chances but failed to convert and went goalless, while West Coast got the ball inside 50 once for a late goal. They didn't score again in the second half, as Melbourne ran up another big score.
Best were Bannan, Purcell, West
Melbourne played under the indigenous name 'Narrm'.
