In their sixth season in the same competition, Melbourne played Geelong for the first time. The visitors were under siege early but kept the Cats scoreless with strong defence, before kicking the first two goals of the game in quick succession. Geelong avoided a scoreless quarter with a late goal, reducing the margin to seven points at the first change. Melbourne took control after the break, kicking three goals to one before half time. The sides split four goals in the third term, before the Demons won the last quarter 27-0 to register an easy victory.
