Kicking with a strong wind in the first quarter the Demons had the opening 13 points of the game, before allowing Fremantle to kick the last three goals and take a narrow lead. The Dockers pressed on with the advantage in the second and expanded the gap to 20 at the half.
Melbourne turned it on the third term, kicking 5.4 to no score to lead by 14 points at the final change. The visitors then kicked the only three goals of the final term to win by four points.
