For the second week in a row the Dees dominated lower ranked opposition in the first term but lost. Needing to win to stay in the top two, Melbourne withstood an early barrage by the winless Pies to keep them scoreless for the first quarter.
In 37 degree heat, the game turned on its head in the second term. Melbourne failed to score and went into the half a goal behind. They added just 1.4 to 6.2 for the rest of the game as Collingwood dealt them their largest AFLW loss to date. Defeat left the Demons a game and percentage behind Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs in the race for a top two spot.
Best were Paxman, O'Dea and Hickey. Smith was concussed and Cranston injured her hand. Debutante Anna Teague was a late replacement for Brooke Patterson.
