After a surprise loss to GWS in 2017 which ultimately ruined their finals chances, Melbourne lined up against the Giants as premiership favourites and were given another scare.
The Demons had all the play early, but were unable to capitalise and conceded goals to the Giants on the rebound. By half time they were in front courtesy of nine more scoring shots, but lost the third quarter and had to fight back from a five point deficit at the last change to win.
Best were O'Dea, Cranston and Scott. Karen Paxman injured her back.
