In their first competitive hitout for the year both the Demons and the Dockers showcased high draft-picks. After an impressive hitout in an intra-club game the week before Melbourne debuted top two picks Tom Scully and Jack Trengove as well as Brisbane recruit Joel MacDonald.

Fremantle had the early running and opened a handy lead in the first quarter before the Demons got themselves back in the game. Despite a five minute period of dominance they failed to make an impact on the scoreboard and were lucky to score their second point of the quarter when Fremantle botched an attempt to run down the clock.

The second quarter saw an improved Melbourne performance, with Green and Davey both adding nine point goals to the tally. With a second left before half-time the margin was respectable, but a controversial goal on or just after the siren to Clancee Pearce stretched the margin and allowed Fremantle to run through the second half comfortably.

Joel Macdonald, Nathan Jones and Jared Rivers were the Demons best.
