Melbourne's horror pre-season continued, even with an understrength side missing up to nine regulars they were unexpectedly slaughtered by the Pies. The battle between Fosters' Cup losers saw Melbourne boot the opening two goals, before losing Brett Lovett with an ankle injury and conceding five in a row before quarter time.
From there the Pies were ruthless, tearing apart a side with kids like Chris Sullivan, Wayne Lamb, Haydn Robins, Brian Stynes and Terry Siderellis.
Best were G. Lovett, Bryce and Schwarz. Brett Lovett had an ankle injury.
For sponsorship reasons, the match was referred to as part of the 'Tip Top Challenge Series'.
Melbourne axed Steven Clark and Jay Viney from their list after the match.
