In their first competitive hit-out of the new season the Demons were outpaced and outplayed for the last three quarters by Fitzroy. The difference in the two side's preparations had been stark, the Lions having played six matches including their first round victory over Footscray a week before while Melbourne had played one intra-club match.
Graeme Yeats kicked the first goal of the season within a minute and the Demons took a goal lead into quarter time.
Despite their lack of preparation the Demons went into the last quarter less than 12 points down, but four quick goals by the Lions blew the margin out to 34 points and killing the contest.
Best were Wilson, Healy and Campbell. Ricky Jackson injured ankle ligaments.
