Ron Barassi admitted his side was "staring down the barrel at half-time" when Hawthorn led by 14 points, before a devastating third term burst carried the Demons home. The second half featured a number of players from the Under 19 premiership side, and the new-look side kicked 8.1 to nothing in the first 19 minutes of the third term. Hawthorn also had a reduced team, with 20 players either injured or unavailable including Leigh Matthews.
Best were Wilson, Flower and Byrne. Gerard Healy injured his knee.
