Port stayed with the Demons all day, and won a comprehensive victory in the centre but couldn't finish the game and were outrun in the fourth term.
Melbourne won in the air, and their defence repelled many of Port's attacks. Barry Bourke, Greg Parke and Barrie Vagg - on the other hand - were efficient up front and Ross Dillon booted five goals.
Ray Biffin was a late inclusion after Frank Davis injured himself in the dressing room.
Best were Biffen, Parke and Bourke.
