Just two days after winning the Reserves premiership, many of the same players backed up for a shot at the Night Grand Final. Ironically Hawthorn were also fielding players coming off a day's rest having been in the Under 19's Grand Final on the Saturday.
Melbourne kicked the first goal after two minutes, Paul Callery from his first kick in senior company, but were horrifically inaccurate for the rest of the first term and went in behind despite having eight scoring shots to six. Strong defence helped keep Melbourne in the game early.
With the Hawks a point behind in the last quarter, Peter Hudson missed from 20 yards out directly in front before Leigh Matthews goalled to put the Hawks in front by a point.
Best were Sullivan, Feldmann and Walker. Stan Alves captained Melbourne because Bob Johnson was unavailable through injury.
