The Demons were four goals behind in the second quarter and it took until the last term for them to run away from the South Australian grand finallists. They were lucky to get two goals before half time while Port was reorganising its defence. Their superior fitness won out in the end.

Barry Bourke suffered a knock on the knee which injured ligaments. Defender Graham Osborne, rover Rob Dowsing and ruckman Brent Jones all hurt their thighs.

Best were Townsend, Johnson and Feldmann.
