1949 Seconds Grand Final

Saturday September 24 - MCG

Melbourne - 3.1, 8.4, 13.7, 17.10.112
Essendon - 2.3, 5.6, 5.8, 9.14.68

Melbourne win by 44 points

Goalkickers: Mueller 7, Heywood 3, Love 3, O'Heare 1, Jeffers 1, Thompson 1

It took until the third quarter for Melbourne to shake their opponents, but they were clearly the better side from the first bounce. It was only Essendon's defence that held back the tide early while Melbourne's ruckmen gave their side continual attacking opportunities.

Essendon attempted to use their weight to get an advantage but were reckless and gave away a free kick to hand Melbourne their fifth goal before Mueller moved forward and kicked three goals in as many minutes.

With Essendon slowing to a crawl the game became crowded and congested, and after breaking the match open in the third quarter the Demons got the first of the last term to finish off the opposition..

Chipp replaced Staines (injured) in the last quarter.
