1933 Seconds Grand Final

Thursday 28 September - MCG
Crowd: 10,000

Melbourne 10.15.75
St Kilda 10.14.74

Melbourne win by 1 point

Goalkickers: Mueller 2, Koochew 2, Watson 2, Moodie 1, Streeter 1, Avery 1, Adams 1

On a hard ground, in front of the largest standalone crowd for a Seconds match ever, the two sides played out a Show Day classic. St Kilda had a stronger ruck, and were better in the air but lacked cohesion in their forward line.

Melbourne got the first two goals before St Kilda got going. They took the initiative but could only manage one goal before the Demons got their third. A late St Kilda goal cut the margin to one point. The Saints struggled again at the start of the second quarter, and only a late goal kept the margin at seven points. Melbourne started the second half with strong play around the wings but couldn't break through a strong defence, taking several minutes of attack to get their seventh goal. Another late goal kept St Kilda to an 11 points deficit at three quarter time.

The margin reached 19 points when a failed kick-in set up Jack Mueller, but St Kilda mounted another late comeback and levelled scores with six minutes to play. The game was won when Melbourne captain Adams snapped through a point with two minutes left, then held on to win after McNamara took a relieving mark in defence.

Best were Mueller, McNamara and King. Mueller was reported for elbowing a St Kilda player in the last quarter.

Other players included Avery, Odgen, Power and Roberts
