Saturday 30 June - Richmond Paddock
Melbourne 2
Richmond 1
Melbourne win
Goalkickers: James Thompson 2
The fourth match of the season between the two sides was almost cancelled due to a flu epidemic sweeping the city, and the sides played with 15 each due to a number of absences. A slippery ground that was smaller than usual meant the ball went out of bounds many times. A number of fans who encroached on the field were knocked over by players
With a short distance between goals and narrow boundaries the ball one or the other goal was usually in peril. Thomas Wray - a late inclusion - seemingly kicked the first goal of the game but it was disallowed on protest as it had touched a defender on the way through. Richmond then opened the scoring before Thompson equalised.
With the next goal deciding the match the two teams went at their task with vigour, but it was Melbourne who remained undefeated against their next door neighbours when Thompson scored his second.
