After winning at Docklands two weeks earlier, Melbourne returned as the away team and nearly pulled off a spectacular comeback after being as much as 33 points down in the second quarter. With their forward line struggling, the Demons conceded four consecutive goals within seven minutes, before booting four of their own to end the half. A Trent Rivers set shot after the siren reduced the margin to eight.
The Bulldogs were on top again at the start of the third term, before the visitors reduced the margin to two points at the final change. Melbourne took the lead twice in the final term, but were never in front by more than a goal, and conceded late to lose. Harvey Langford had a chance to mark in the dying seconds for what may have been a kick after the siren to win the game, but was unable to hold the ball.
Best were Kysiah Pickett, Max Gawn, and Harrison Petty. Jake Lever suffered a concussion in the last quarter.
