Gerald 'Gerry' Donnelly was a wingman who started his career with Essendon Juniors before transferring to South Australia. Returning to Victoria he debuted strongly with the Redlegs and was selected for Victoria in his first year before the league ruled that he was ineligible to play for Melbourne under zoning rules. He had lived in North Melbourne's zone before moving to South Australia.
As a result he moved to the Shinboners the next year and captain-coached them during the season. In 1927 he moved to Albury as part of his employment and coached St Patrick's. He returned to North in 1930. After his opportunities with the Shinboners dried up he moved to Essendon during the season for three games more.
Some sources show him being from Hunter FC not Sturt, and from CBC St Kilda not Albury.
