A rover, forward and wingman, Cathie played two seasons with the Reds. He had played in Leopold's 1900 Metropolitan Association premiership before being recruited by Melbourne the next year.m His career highlight came on debut when he kicked five goals in a massive win over St Kilda.
In 1912 when player numbering began, Cathie secured the rights to the publication of the numbers in a new publication called the Football Record which was printed by the company he worked for. Cathie was a VFL delegate for Hawthorn from 1927 to 1934 and a Geelong delegate from 1936 to 1945 when he retired due to ill-health. He served as the VFL's honorary treasurer, and was later named a VFL life member.
