Saturday 3 September - Friendly Societies Ground
Melbourne 1.3, 1.3, 1.7, 1.8
Carlton 0.2, 3.5, 4.5, 5.8
Carlton win by 4 goals
Goalkickers: Burns 1
The visitors started as hot favourites, leading to a lower crowd than usual in matches between the old rivals. Melbourne won the toss, but a wind blowing across the ground meant little advantage. They kicked the only goal of the first quarter, but conceded three without reply after changing ends.
Best were Griffith, King and Murphy.
Also played - McCrindle
Notes
Melbourne's half-time score shown in some sources at 1.5
