James, real first name was Melville, was expected to sign with South Melbourne after impressing in games against VFL representative teams in Ballarat during 1922 but Melbourne secretary Andrew Manzie beat them to his signature. He was cleared to Melbourne in June 1923. James played two games in his first season, but failed to reproduce his Ballarat form, playing just one more game in 1924. He joined Essendon in 1926 but failed to play a match.
