Melbourne bounced back from their first loss of the season, but had to wait until deep in the last quarter to win. They trailed at every change, and were behind late in the game before running away with victory. Their crowding tactics backfired in the first quarter, leaving the game as a scramble in front of the South goal for several minutes during the first quarter. The home side still kicked four goals to lead by 14 points at quarter time. Melbourne goalled within 30 seconds of restart through Wittman, and his second cut the margin to less than a kick. They briefly led late in the quarter before South retook the half time lead.

The standard of play improved in the third term but Melbourne could only manage one goal and conceded one after the bell to go in 17 points behind.

Melbourne rallied desperately in the last quarter and got the first goal through Johnson. They should have had another through Wittman but he missed an easy chance. Eventually their pace and stamina won out and they overhauled South. With the Reds just one goal in front Haw shook off the effects of a knee injury to kick the sealer for a victory which left Melbourne in second place behind Collingwood on percentage.

Best were Vine, Wittman and Davidson.
