The two sides met in the first game of the season for the third consecutive year, and the Redlegs took a two-one advantage with a comfortable victory.
After an inaccurate first quarter saw them level despite having five more scoring shots the home side kicked away in the second. St Kilda drew within a goal in the third but that was their last gasp, kicking one goal to five in the final term.
Johnson, Taylor and Warne-Smith were amongst the best. Chadwick suffered a leg injury which left him nearly useless after half time, and which kept him out until Round 9. Col Deane received a knock on his hip.
