A forward who debuted with SANFL side Norwood in 1992, Pitt was recruited by Collingwood in 1996. He had a purple patch in the middle of his first season when he kicked 11 goals in three weeks, but despite this early success chose to return to South Australia during the 1997 pre-season and return to his job as a police officer. The Western Bulldogs believed that he regretted ending his AFL career prematurely and took him in the Pre-season draft, but Pitt opted to remain in Adelaide. He instead played in a premiership for Norwood. After capturing their 1999 Best and Fairest, Melbourne offered him a third chance at league footy.

Pitt returned to Victoria, but after a delayed start to 2000 due to a shoulder injury, the now 26-year-old only played three matches. He showed promise in VFL games but couldn't establish himself in the side. At the end of the season he returned to Norwood, before joining Salisbury North in 2003. He also played for the South Australian police side, amateur side Tea Tree Gully, and for Renmark in 2012.
