Aitken, a Blue since 1891, their VFL first captain, and #1 heritage player (on account of alphabetical order) walked out on Carlton after in off-field dispute following their loss to Melbourne in Round 2, 1898. He was cleared to Melbourne two weeks later, and after recovering from a training injury Aitken became the first player in VFL history to play for two clubs in the same season.
