Known as "Doc", Steel was a ruckman who first trained with Melbourne in the 1929 pre-season. He was cleared in May 1930 but did not play a game. At his clearance hearing he said he wanted to join Melbourne because he had friends who played there and the club had secured him a good job. He said Melbourne, Carlton, and Hawthorn had offered him financial inducements to join them.
Steel played the last four games of the season, but despite being named as one of his side's best on debut, Steele found his opportunities limited over the next two seasons. Collingwood applied to interview him at the end of 1932. He returned to Brunswick in May 1936.
