Hagenauer joined Sale in August 1898 and there was a protest by Bairnsdale about him playing as they didn't believe he was eligible, until Sale submitted that the campus of Ormond College he attended was in Gippsland. After his playing career was over, Hagenauer worked as a doctor in Gippsland.
In June 1915, Hagenauer (whose real first name was Heinrich) enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps under the surname 'Hagen' and served in England and France.
