Biggest win against Essendon
Biggest half time lead (80 points)
For the second time in recent weeks, Melbourne went into a game on the back of a disappointing loss with a weakened side, before registering a huge victory. Essendon was third from bottom of the ladder, but had been competitive in recent losses before being blown away by a 14 goal to two first half.
Melbourne burst out of the blocks with their best first quarter of the season. Essendon had the use of a slight breeze, but were kept to two goals, while the home side booted seven. By half time the margin was out to 80, the largest in club history. The pace of carnage slowed after the break, with Essendon narrowly winning the third quarter, and barely losing the last, keeping the margin under a hundred points.
The result was a contrast to Melbourne's diabolical performance against Fitzroy a week earlier. They played swiftly and skillfully - especially in attack where they tore Essendon to shreds. The only let-down in their forward play was missing a number of easy shots in the second half. Holding a big lead, and with finals shaping battles to come, Melbourne didn't have to exert themselves in the second half and they allowed Essendon some respectability. The victory put them back into fourth place ahead of a three week break for the interstate carnival.
Best were Taylor, Deane and White.
