McInnes played Seconds at Melbourne in 1926 and 1927 before joining Port Melbourne in 1928. He played 53 games for the VFA club before returning to Melbourne in 1932. Port Melbourne deferred his clearance application three times before he was allowed to transfer. He kicked three goals on debut but just one more in his remaining three games - all losses.
In the 1933 pre-season he played for the first quarter of a practice match before leaving to attend his own wedding. He played in the first game of the year, and four Seconds games before being cleared to St Kilda midway through 1933. He played three games for them in 1934 before joining Brunswick in the VFA and topping that league's goalkicking with 84 goals in 1937. He remained at Brunswick through 1939.
His uncle was George Haines.
