After first appearing on the senior list in 1969, the defender played eight games in 1970 before returning to Shepparton United in the Goulburn Valley League. He was named their captain/coach in 1973 aged 23. Melbourne was keen to keep Campbell but he preferred to remain in the country, only reluctantly travelling to the city to train and play.
After two seasons as Sheparton United's captain/coach, winning a premiership in 1974, Campbell returned to the Demons in 1975 and played three more seasons before retiring. In his last year Campbell was captain of the Reserves. He then captain/coached Tongala in 1978 and 1979 before rejoining Shepparton United again in 1980, captain/coaching them in 1980 and 1981, and coaching in 1982. He then coached Tongala to premierships in 1983 and 1984, remaining there through 1985. In 1992, Campbell coached Kyabram, then the ACTFL's Tuggeranong in 1992.
His son Brad played for Melbourne and another, Blake, played for Carlton.
