With two matches to play Melbourne held a six point lead over fifth placed St Kilda, but a loss to the Seasiders meant that they had to play a final round match against unbeaten Collingwood needing to win to qualify for the four. They lost, St Kilda won at Footscray and Melbourne were out of fourth after defending the position for most of the year.

In May the Theatrical Employees' Union called upon unionists to boycott games at the MCG on the charge that the ground's management wasn't observing terms of the award covering ticket sellers.

At the end of the year the committee instructed its delegates to the VFL to vote against the further expansion of the competition and a 22 round season.

The club had income of 3041p, and expenses of 4094p. One of the fathers of the club, Henry Harrison passed away on September 2nd.
