Milestones:

Despite going in as favourites Melbourne started slowly against North, and struggled for the first half before drawing away in the seconds thanks to Bob Johnson's dominant goalkicking performance. They kicked into the breeze in the first quarter but did all the early attacking before North matched them with three goals by quarter time. The sides approached the game with different tactics, North going straight down the middle of the ground, with Melbourne playing along the wings. The defenders of both sides were on top, and the teams split four goals in the quarter.

The match was won in the third term when Melbourne kicked five goals to one. Johnson had so many chances that he could afford to kick poorly and still register nine goals

Best were Johnson, Usher and Esposito. Wittman was unavailable to play, replaced by McConville.

The win left Melbourne in fourth on percentage, a game behind Collingwood and equal to Carlton, Geelong and Richmond.
