Melbourne's worst ever season came to an end with another crushing loss despite Collingwood missing several of their best players. The reds had taken a lead into quarter time, and they held their own in the second term until the last few minutes when Collingwood took over.

The third quarter followed a similar pattern, with Melbourne playing reasonably well before Collingwood steamrolled them in the last few minutes. They did as they liked in the last quarter, and with Melbourne's resistance broken the Magpies racked up a big win.

Best were Sleeman, Onyons and S. Anderson.
