Melbourne were expected to put some light into their disastrous season against a side that they seemed to match up well against, but ended up putting in their worst performance of the year. Twice they failed to kick a goal for the quarter, and to one end of the ground they managed just 0.3 for the day as St Kilda won easily.

Best were Libbis, Glass and Jones. Les Jones was also reported for striking but found not guilty. Kinnear and Margitich were injured.

The defeat left Melbourne only above last placed side Essendon on percentage.
