After a fighting performance in losing to Collingwood a week earlier, Melbourne got their season back on track. They started well, with seven of the 11 goals in the first quarter, five coming to Eric Glass. His last two, set up a 19 point lead at the first break. From there, Melbourne had difficulty shaking off the visitors, with St Kilda getting within a couple of goals multiple times before Melbourne steadied in the last quarter.
Glass was up to seven goals during the third term, and the lead was out to 33 point at three quarter time. Smith kicked the first goal of the final term, but St Kilda kept the final margin down to five goals.
Best were La Fontaine, who had 26 kicks, Beames, and Mueller. 19th man Bennett replaced Foster (knee injury) at half time.
