With eight players on the injured list, Melbourne tried two more debutants in an unsuccessful attempt to break through for their second win of the season.
North led narrowly at the first change, before they used a pace and aerial advantage to adding three goals to their lead in the second term. Melbourne kicked two of the first three goals of the the third quarter, but North got the last four before three quarter time. Melbourne narrowly won the last quarter but was too far behind to challenge, going down to their seventh loss in eight matches.
Best were Taylor, Glass and Niven. Jones went off in the last quarter after a kick to the thigh, replaced by 19th man Usher. Sambell injured his ankle.
