Having thrashed North Melbourne two days earlier, the Melbourne won their second game of the long weekend and an eighth in a row. It was the last time two rounds were played over one long weekend.
In front of the largest home and away crowd in the history of the league to that point, Melbourne were inaccurate early, with Johnson missing several easy shots. Carlton led by five points at quarter time after Melbourne kicked their second goal through Warne-Smith. The Blues extended the gap to 17 points early in the quarter before Melbourne recovered to led by four points at half time.
Melbourne finally kicked away - accurately - in the last few minutes to continue their record breaking start to the year. When a Carlton defender spilled the ball in front of goal, Dunbar put Melbourne ahead, before Davidson kicked the sealer.
Best were Warne-Smith, Johnson and Vine. Stan Wittman was reported for elbowing but found not guilty.
