After two competitive losses, the Redlegs finally tasted victory in their third engagement of the season. Despite rain falling throughout the match it was played at a high standard, and Melbourne adopted to the conditions better - maintaining their pace despite the conditions. They kicked three in a row including a 65 yard punt from Margitich, to lead by 16 points before Essendon kicked a goal from a free kick just before the bell.
The margin was reduced to less than a goal early in the second term, before Melbourne kicked three goals in a row. Essendon recovered, and it took a goal to Margitich at the end of the quarter to restore a 12 point lead. Four goals to three in the third term, including two to Beames, set up a winning lead and piled on goals early in the final term to seal victory.
Best were Beames, Fischer and Jones. Melbourne was without Robert C Johnson who realised that his style of play was not suitable for the conditions and stood down. Riley was originally 19th man and Conole was promoted from the emergencies. Beames (ankle), Tymms (side) and debutant Barnett (shoulder) all suffered injuries.
