The Redlegs belied a woeful record in Geelong to record a shock victory over a terribly inaccurate opponent who booted 3.21 over the last three quarters. Melbourne had the best of the opening minutes but registered the only point of the first 11 minutes on a day where the wind blew directly across the ground. The teams combined for five goals before quarter time, with Melbourne holding a seven point lead. In the second quarter the wind turned in Melbourne's favour, and thanks to the home side kicking 1.8, they were able to extend the margin to 14.
Despite their poor forward, Geelong was just 12 points down with five minutes remaining but couldn't bridge the gap and conceded last goals to lose comfortably.
Best were Streeter, Shelton and Corbett.
