The Redlegs went down to another big loss as they limped towards the end of the season. With most of the focus on Moriarty of Fitzroy going for the league's record for goals in a season, Melbourne got the first two goals through Davie, before Fitzroy answered with four in a row to end the quarter. By half time they were 40 points in front and on their way to an easy win.

Despite more than doubling their score in the last quarter they couldn't stop the Maroons kicking away to a big win. They had matched the visitors in most elements of the game, but struggled to get through Fitzroy's defence. Moriarty ended with eight, breaking the record.

Best were Corbett, Chadwick and Wilson.
