With four games to play, and a two game break on the third place Richmond, Melbourne could have all but sewn up a top two finish and double chance with a win. A big crowd gathered in anticipation of a top match, but after kicking the only four goals of the second term to take an 18 point lead into the half, Melbourne crumbled. Abernethy goalled 20 seconds after quarter time, and Melbourne's defence stoutly held the Tigers out, but the three goal lead disappeared when they only kicked 1.2 in the second half.
Best were Tymms, Latham, and Wittman.
