Harold SG "Jock" Ball was cleared to Melbourne in April 1935 after winning the 1934 Ovens & Murray League's best and fairest award while playing as a half-back. Ball had previously been invited to train at Richmond, and was expected to play in their 1935 pre-season games before joining Melbourne instead.
In May 1937 he was proposed as part of a swap to Hawthorn for Bert Chandler, but remained at Melbourne and played one more game late in the season. Ball was cleared to Essendon in May 1938 but did not play another senior game, then trained with Williamstown in the 1939 pre-season.
