"Dodger" Evans joined the army in August 1914 but was able to play out the rest of the season, and most of the next before Melbourne went into recess due to World War I. Captained the 6th Batallion representative team in Egypt and France, and the 6th Brigade team.

In 1917, Evans was seriously wounded in the leg during the Battle of Passchendaele. When Melbourne returned to the competition in 1919, Evans returned to training with his leg in a brace. He intended to keep playing but the effects of his injuries were too great to overcome and Evans retired.
