Former vice-captain of the Geelong College team, McLean was also a talented cricketer.
A versatile player who could fill a key position at either end of the ground or play in the centre, he joined Geelong in 1882, setting a record by kicking 25 goals in 13 games, and stayed with them until the end of 1889. He joined Melbourne for one season in 1890, declining to play against Geelong. In 1892 he returned to play for Geelong against Melbourne when they were short a player. He retired after that season.
He also played two first class cricket games for Victoria in 1891 and 1892.
McLean died in a railway accident near Hawthorn in 1915.
