The son of an ex-St Kilda player joined Melbourne in early 1933 but the forward didn't appear in the senior side. Farmer instead joined Richmond and played eight games, including their losing Grand Final. Coached Warragul Rovers in 1935, then played 19 games at North Melbourne between 1936 and 1937 before returning to Warragul again.
