An accomplished junior, three time Dandenong and District league best and fairest and two time Victorian representative, Robins graduated through Melbourne's Under 19s and Reserves. After winning the Reserves best and fairest in 1991, Robins made his senior debut the next year.
The defender played twenty games in two seasons before leaving the club. He was linked with Collingwood at the end of 1993 before transferring to Richmond early in 1994. He played four more games there before leaving the AFL.
Between 1995 and 1997 Robins played for Woodville/West Torrens in the SANFL, then joined VFL side Sandringham for 13 games in 1998. He later played for before joining Ringwood (EFL) and Somerville (Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League) as a playing coach, before appearing in four premierships for Beaconsfield.
In 1999, Robins transferred to fellow MPNFL club Beaconsfield where he played in four premierships, coached for two seasons and twice kicked 100 goals in a season . He was later selected in their "team of the century". He Joined Paynesville of the East Gippsland League in 2009 and was appointed their coach for 2010.

Some sources suggest he was only at Woodville in 1995 and captain coached Ringwood in 1996.
